Japanese Influence On Hawaii?

As I’ve mentioned I’m staying in Waikiki on vacation in Hawaii. I’ve made an observation which has me pondering what caused this seemingly uniquely Hawaiian breed of convenience stores. There’s a line of them which are a combination of mini corner grocery store, beach supply store, and clothing store. It’s a nice idea. So far in Japan I’ve seen plenty of convenience stores without these particular qualities. However, the Hawaiian version shares its sans-gasoline quality with its Japanese counterpart as well as a tendency (at least in Waikiki) to sit on every other street corner.

It’s kind of fascinating. I  haven’t seen anything really like it in the couple other states I’ve lived/worked/vacationed in. So I have to wonder with the parrallels if I’m not seeing a bit of Japanese influence on Hawaii.
